Time to Get Equal week finished a couple of weeks ago now. We hope you have enjoyed taking part or reading about the events all across the country.
There was one particular event that was not covered as closely and I felt it warranted a blog – the inter Scope football tournament. 6 departments took part in the group stage and knockout cup; HR, IT, Facilities, Finance, Communications and Policy, and my team Fundraising. Everyone had their own name and we went for Fundercats, pun very much intended.
From my perspective it took a bit of sweet talking to get the team together as the competitiveness across the building was at levels seen between England and Germany. As a team we were realistic of our expectations. We had 2 wheelchair users, 3 girls and a general feeling we were there to have fun and enjoy the evening while the others battled out their grudges.
We were to play 2 games in the group stage with the top 2 teams of each group going into the semi finals. We lost 4.0 to comms but pulled out an amazing result to facilities winning 6.1. This meant a semi-final with the strong finance team. An ‘under the cross bar and in’ smash put us 1.0 up and we held on – just. So back to comms again in the final, tired and knowing they had beaten us already, we were content. We did take the lead but they came back strong. In the end Lisa from their dept who I luckily poached to bolster our numbers came in near the end to equalise 3.3 for us. The game went to a penalty shootout. The result came down to the keepers where Jason, our director, saved their last pen and scored the winning one. Absolutely unbelievable evening. The favourites were so despondent and many couldn’t believe we did it, but we did. Well done Fundercats!
